The college started with only 48 students and in five years, the roll raised to 396. In 1910, Raja Manmath Roy Chowdhury, the zamindar of Santosh, tangail affiliated the Pramath-Manmath College of Tangail with Jagannath College.It was known as the best equipped private college in Dhaka as early as 1910. With the establishment of Dhaka University in 1921 the college had to stop admission in Degree courses and was renamed Jagannath Intermediate College . This status was changed after 28 years in 1949, when it reopened Degree classes. The college was taken over by the government in 1968.
The teachers and students of the college took active part in the Language Movement of the early 1950s, the mass movements of the 1960s and the War of Liberation of the country in 1971. The college produced tens of thousands graduates. Many of them have become famous at home and abroad. Noted among the alumni of the college are sufi motahar hosen (poet), Abdul Hamid (sports organiser and sports journalist), Bhabatosh Dutta (economist), Premendra Mitra (writer and poet), AR Yusuf (Bar-at-Law, State Minister of Bangladesh in early 1980s), A KMA Rouf (artist), Anisuzzaman (educationist, researcher), and Brozen Das (swimmer, the first Indian to swim across English Channel).
The Management of University is striving to make this establishment as a center of excellence for creating successful and productive citizens of Bangladesh .
Department of Management Studies
Background
The Government Jagannath College was established in 1884 with a view to develop the education in this region. Department of Commerce was opened in 1942 in the Jagannath College . Department of Management was established in the year of 1972 just after the liberation war of Bangladesh to spread the light of business education. It introduced honours in Management in the session of 1972-73 and Master Degree in the following year.
Features and Academic Programs of the Department
The Department of Management of Jagannath University is pioneer in the business education of Bangladesh . It is committed to provide the highest educational standard to cope with the growing business environment. The department is empowered to provide teaching for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Master of Business Studies (MBS), Masters of Business Administration (MBA) as per the rules and regulations of the university.
Many dignified academicians and scholars of commerce rendered their services in the department. Prof. Md. Ashraf Hossain was the first Chairman as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies’, followed by Professor Tofail Ahmed and Professor Anisur Rahman. At Present this department is being headed by Professor Dr. Md. AKM Moniruzzaman with the coordination of Professor Dr. Md. Mossarof Hossian the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies.
There are about 4000 (four thousand) students enrolled in the department. Among them 400 students continuing in the BBA First Year 2nd Semester and Second Year 1st Semester (2005 -06 & 2006 -07 sessions) and rest of the students are in the BBS honors and Master degree Courses.
MBA Program
Masters of Business Administration launched at July 2009. Dept. of Management Studies started this program with 415 students.
The MBA program is one of the demanding and highly accepted programs in the region. The program has constantly updated and monitored by a high-power, independent academic council. This program emphasizes discussion, seminar, workshop, and project based method. It also digs into managerial experience and research, and research based learning in combination with textbooks. The MBA is also a professional degree that builds skills in graduates enabling them to make effective decisions in management. This has done using a diverse mode of pedagogy, from class lecturing to group assignments to industry experts, field visits and seminar attendance. The curricula has developed keeping in mind that these specializations would enable graduates to pursue business careers.
